oh gosh this is the quickest we’ve ever reached a goal!! Thank you thank you so much for your contributions! We appreciate you!!
It's six years in the making but I'm honored to be a puppy raiser for Guide Dogs of Texas, with the privilege of helping raise little Yarrow.
She's is a yellow Lab with a very big personality and a bright future ahead. She's in her formative years, so she's learning how to navigate the world: coffee shops and wine bars, busy sidewalks and the boredom of work from home life. Her favorite place though is our family’s cattle ranch outside of Houston. And surprisingly, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth!
She’s smart, curious, remarkably steady, and very loved — including by my 16-year-old dog, Junebug, who got a puppy for her birthday whether she asked for one or not.
Together Junebug and I are working hard to help Yarrow build the skills, confidence, and experiences she’ll need before returning to Guide Dogs of Texas for the next stage of her training.
For me, this experience is deeply personal.
Blindness runs in my family. My grandmother was legally blind, as were two of her siblings. One of them is my great aunt Judy, with whom I’ve spent a lot of time over the past several years. I’ve seen firsthand the everyday things she navigates — the walks, routines, and little workarounds that become so normal you eventually stop mentioning them.
Yarrow won’t become Aunt Jude’s guide dog. But she's a big part of why I’m puppy raising.
I know what greater independence and mobility could mean for someone I love. And if I can help raise a good guide dog, someday another family gets to see someone they love experience that same possibility.
People often joke that I should make sure Yarrow “flunks out” so I can keep her. I understand the temptation. I’m already in love with her, but Yarrow has a destiny. Someone, somewhere, needs her more than I do. I'll do my best to help her become the dog they need — and then, eventually, to let her go.
This Big Give, I’m raising funds for Guide Dogs of Texas to help Yarrow and other puppies like her make that journey. Guide Dogs of Texas provides guide dogs at no cost to Texans who are blind or visually impaired, and I’m incredibly proud to play one small part in that mission.
Thank you for cheering Yarrow on, supporting Guide Dogs of Texas, and being part of our journey. 🐾
