Creating Community Through the Arts

Bihl Haus Arts is more than a neighborhood gallery—we are a citywide creative sanctuary dedicated to our core belief of creating community through the arts. We know that artistic expression is not a luxury reserved for the few; it is a vital catalyst for personal dignity, mental well-being, and lasting human connection. Too often, people face invisible walls of high material costs, lack of physical access, or social isolation that keep them from exploring their own creative voices. We actively tear down those walls. Our core community programs are entirely free of charge, ensuring that every participant who walks through our doors—or joins us remotely—finds an open door, a supportive community, and all the tools they need to create without financial barriers.

Our work reaches across the community to meet people exactly where they are. Through our GO! Arts initiative, we carry hands-on visual arts education directly into local senior centers. We believe creativity has no expiration date, and our regular sessions provide older adults with a reliable creative home, a sense of continuing purpose, and meaningful friendships that combat the deep impacts of isolation.

For our military community, our Forward! Arts program serves active duty service members and veterans through both in-person studio sessions and live virtual cohorts. Transitioning out of service or living with the invisible wounds of duty requires calm, non-clinical spaces to decompress, share experiences, and connect through creative work. For those who cannot physically make it to our studio, we ship physical art kits directly to their homes and maintain our virtual streaming platforms so that homebound and rural veterans remain an active, embraced part of our weekly creative circle.

We also recognize a critical gap facing neurodivergent young adults. When these young people graduate or age out of the school system, they often experience an immediate drop-off in mental health resources, structured activities, and daily peer connections. Our Onward! Arts program offers a welcoming, judgment-free space designed to keep them socially anchored. Here, they can work with quality studio materials, explore their creative independence, and build enduring peer support networks during an otherwise uncertain period of transition.

Beyond our weekly sessions, Bihl Haus Arts anchors local culture by celebrating our neighborhood and its creators. We host the beloved On & Off Fred Studio Tour, an event that connects the public directly with working artists in their creative spaces. We believe that celebrating local culture should never come with a ticket price, which is why we produce tour guides, maps, and events to keep this neighborhood tradition accessible to everyone.

To keep these core initiatives running with zero tuition, zero studio fees, and zero material costs for participants, we rely on community support. Every single dollar from this campaign is dedicated entirely to the essential resources that make these gatherings possible. It allows us to contract high-quality local art instructors who bring skilled guidance, warmth, and professional mentorship directly to our classrooms. It supplies bulk canvases, paints, brushes, and paper delivered straight to our senior centers. It stocks quality mediums for veterans gathered in our studio and covers the mailed kits and streaming tools that keep remote veterans connected. It equips our young adults with dedicated studio supplies, and it prints the maps and signage that keep our neighborhood arts tour free for all.
