Healing Hearts After the Flood: A Community Response by The Ecumenical Center

Typically, this time of year brings joyful updates and photos from Camp Wellness, showcasing the latest summer activities. And indeed, Camp Wellness buzzed with excitement this season. However, the devastating flooding in Kerrville and across The Texas Hill Country shifted our focus toward urgent community support and recovery.

On July 4, 2025, The Ecumenical Center rallied an incredible team of community volunteers to assemble First Responder Bags filled with critical supplies, and Comfort Kits designed to help children cope with trauma. Thanks to their tireless effort, over 700 First Responder Kits and 700 Comfort Kits were lovingly prepared—each containing essential items along with hand-written notes to offer encouragement and emotional support.

Once completed, the kits were hand-delivered along highways by our dedicated psychologists, counselors, peer support specialists, and crisis counselors. The Ecumenical Center recognized that children throughout San Antonio and the Hill Country were deeply affected by the flooding. As a result, our team distributed the Comfort Kits to Day Care Centers and Head Start programs across the region, bringing compassion and care directly to those in need.

Now, our mission continues. The Ecumenical Center is offering vital counseling services to children, adolescents, adults, and families impacted by this disaster. As the Trauma-Informed Certification Center for Bexar County, we understand that such flooding can re-traumatize individuals—especially those with past experiences of loss or tragedy.  Not only families who lost everything in the flooding, but also those who vacationed just this summer, along our beloved rivers or attended camps in the Hill Country, and those who knew someone affected by the flood, are now turning to us for support.

Our work spans multiple locations, including San Antonio, Boerne, Kerrville, Bandera, Bulverde, Marble Falls, and Burnet—meeting people where they are, both emotionally and geographically.
