Support Reaching Maximum Independence: Empowering Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

For over 43 years, Reaching Maximum Independence (RMI) has been committed to empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to reach their fullest potential for independence. We offer high-quality residential services, day programs, and job training both in community settings and at our facilities. Our comprehensive support includes on-site Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs), and Case Management to provide tailored care for each individual. Our facility also includes the administrative department, which was previously housed separately. Thanks to generous grants and donations, such as those from The Big Give, we have successfully consolidated all our programs under one roof, enhancing coordination and accessibility for those we serve.

As individuals with IDD transition from the school system into adulthood, programs like RMI become increasingly essential. According to the latest data from the Texas Workforce Council in 2024, out of the 2.3 million residents in San Antonio, approximately 120,000 have cognitive disabilities. Additionally, around 2.1% of children in public schools are diagnosed with IDD, and with approximately 600 special needs students graduating each year, the demand for robust adult programming continues to rise.

Your donation is crucial in supporting these individuals and their families through this important transition. Contributions help fund vital services, such as:

  • Employment Assistance: Helping individuals find and maintain meaningful employment.

  • Life Skills Training: Teaching essential skills for daily living and personal independence.

  • Residential Support: Providing safe, supportive living environments for those who are living away from home.

By donating to RMI, you are directly contributing to the betterment of the lives of individuals with IDD, ensuring they have access to the resources and support they need to thrive as they move into the next phase of their lives. Your generosity enables us to continue offering these vital services and to adapt to the growing demand for adult programming.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of those we serve.

Who We Are

For the past 38 years, RMI has provided a spectrum of services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In the past three years, we have grown from serving 147 participants to serving 219 individuals daily. Our growth rate is attributed to the addition of 4 group homes, our Life Enrichment Program, and our Supported Employment program. These operations allow our individuals to reach their maximum level of independence.

Each participant's team consists of case management, nursing, vocational training, various therapists, family, friends, and other community members. Each team member is dedicated to ensuring our individuals live and function as independently as possible. Participants are state-mandated to attend a day program or receive employment services during day time hours. Our trained day program staff provide life skills training and social activities to help our participants live and work successfully in the community. The Supported Employment team consists of 5 certified staff who help our individuals Find, Get, and Keep employment. The backbone of our organization is our Direct Care Staff. These individuals provide 24-7 care to our participants in their group homes.

FY2021 will present a unique set of challenges in addition to the difficulties faced with COVID-19 in FY2020. Every participant comes with a new set of challenges and obstacles. We will increase our team size and lower our staff to client ratio based on the increase in individuals with autism over the last three years. We need to engage these individuals with the technology they need to communicate and navigate the world around them. Our Life Enrichment Progam needs more technological resources to assist these individuals each day.
