Paws & Purrs Rescue was formed in memory to the cats and kittens lost due to lack of resources and education on spay/neuter and the overpopulation crisis. Since our formation, we have steadily grown into a foster-based organization committed to helping save the lives of fragile or at-risk cats and kittens. We focus on giving the people of San Antonio, TX the assistance and education to help save more cats and kittens every year.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, loss of income, shelter, and basic needs has led to many people being unable to care for themselves, let alone their pets. Shelters have seen a massive surge in animals coming from dire situations, reproducing endlessly, sick, injured, etc. leading to them being at constant full capacity and euthanasia rates growing rather than declining. Our rescue takes a 'full-cycle' approach: handling fostering, spaying/neutering entire feral colonies, monitoring colonies for new cats, handling all necessary medical care and educating community members for the future. The number of cats and kittens rescued and TNR'd continues to grow exponentially each year as our rescue is able to expand its capacity to intake, traps available, and volunteers!
We cannot foster / adopt our way out of this overpopulation crisis. Spay/neuter is absolutely at the center of fixing this!
Our yearly costs for food, spay/neuter surgeries, & medicine are now reaching about $10,000. This does not include expensive surgeries for special or complicated cases!
Last year, because of your help, we were able to cover a leg amputation, full dental, and emergency care for a foster with a liver infection. We're sure we can do even more this year!
We care for some of the most vulnerable populations that are quick to be euthanized in shelters due to lack of space or funding. Those are groups such as orphaned neonate kittens, senior cats, or cats and kittens with other treatable, medical complications. When we work with a new cat or litter of kittens, we go to the source to spay and neuter the colony and speak with the neighbors in the area to teach them to ensure the population does not keep growing! We have a very hands-on, grass-roots approach to make sure the community is being educated, communicating and advocating for each other and we need your help!
Our focus, while helping foster and hold adoptions, is to give the public the tools they need to make sure we make a lasting impact on the overpopulation crisis happening in our city.
These are TNR brochures we made for our rescue in 2024 that we hand out. We are currently working on a Spanish translation for them as well as other educational items to hand out to spread the word about TNR!
