Since 1982, Bat Conservation International (BCI) has combined science, conservation, and collaboration to protect bats and the places they need to survive. Today, as bats face growing threats from habitat loss, disease, climate change, and other pressures, our mission is more urgent than ever: to prevent bat extinctions and ensure that bats, people, and ecosystems thrive together.

BCI works where we can make the greatest difference for bats. We protect critical caves and other roosts, restore landscapes, develop solutions to threats like white-nose syndrome and wind energy fatalities, and equip conservationists and communities around the world with the knowledge and tools to protect bats.

Our work begins with bats, but our impact extends far beyond them. Bats pollinate plants, disperse seeds, control insect populations, and help sustain ecosystems that people and wildlife depend upon. Protecting bats means protecting the remarkable natural systems we all share.

And some of BCI’s most iconic conservation work happens right here in Texas. At Bracken Cave Preserve near San Antonio, BCI protects the summer home of more than 20 million Mexican free-tailed bats—the largest known bat colony in the world. Their nightly emergence is an extraordinary reminder of what is possible when people choose to protect wildlife.
