That Water Bead Lady

That Water Bead Lady is a nonprofit organization founded after a devastating childhood injury caused by water beads. It began with a very specific mission raising awareness about the hidden risks of water beads but grew into something much broader: using real world product injuries to identify weaknesses in the systems meant to protect consumers and then working to change those systems.

The organization combines lived experience, injury research, product testing, public education, medical literature, regulatory advocacy, and collaboration with government, industry, healthcare professionals, and other safety organizations. Rather than focusing only on telling consumers to avoid dangerous products, That Water Bead Lady looks at what allowed the harm to happen in the first place, how products are designed and marketed, how injuries are reported, how hazards are detected, how retailers respond, and what happens after a dangerous product has already been sold.

In practical terms, the organization has worked to raise national awareness of water-bead injuries, contributed to regulatory and industry changes, encouraged retailers to remove hazardous products, supported scientific and medical research, and advocated for stronger systems for preventing and responding to product-related injuries.

At its core, That Water Bead Lady takes lessons learned from one family's experience with a preventable product injury and turns them into changes designed to prevent the next family from experiencing the same thing.
