Communities Under the Bridge is a ministry with a twofold vision: 1) to provide a safe place for churches, organizations, non-profits, and individuals to come and serve those in need (a local mission field or hub for community service) and 2) to provide a place where the homeless and those in need can come for spiritual growth, food, clothing, and referral to longer-term social services. Community teams host worship, prayer, bible study, meals, clothing distribution, medical and dental clinics, veterinary clinics, emergency winter shelter, and more at our property near downtown. Our vision this year is to expand health and wellness among our unhoused family with essential site-based services and mobile wraparound care. Our goal is to restore dignity and hope that will encourage our unhoused guests to seek a better rhythm of life.
Church Under the Bridge began in 1997 under the overpass bridge at US Highway 281 adjacent to the old Pearl Brewery near Broadway Street. For years, individuals with a genuine heart for the homeless would bring the Good News message of hope and salvation while offering hospitality with a simple camp stove from the back of a van. They would prepare and serve a meal and minister one-on-one to the needs of those attending. In 2005, three benefactors united, purchased land, and built a church facility with a large commercial kitchen, dining room, clothing lockers, and backyard picnic area. The new facility opened in 2011.
In 2020, the board of directors began a strategic review and realized Church Under the Bridge had become a community-led organization in many ways. With needs and services multiplying during the pandemic, the direction of the ministry took shape as we responded to help our unsheltered neighbors. In 2021, we began stewarding the delivery of spiritual care and hospitality by the larger family of God in the San Antonio area (hence the name evolved toward Communities Under the Bridge). During 2025, we served well over 100 people on most nights throughout the week, month and year. We appreciate your continued support!
All of your donation goes back into sustaining current programs and toward our vision for expanding hospitality + health and wellness services for the unhoused members of our community.
