Bulverde Area Humane Society

A nonprofit organization

Volunteers, donations and our community power Bulverde Area Humane Society!

At BAHS, we treat the hundreds of dogs and cats abandoned, surrendered, or born into our care as our own. They are provided medical care, food, shelter, and emotional support until they find their forever homes; no matter how long that takes. We are a no-kill shelter.

We spay, neuter, vaccinate, and microchip every animal in our shelter. We treat their injuries and transport them to veterinary care. We bottle feed and keep warm the tiny, helpless ones who have lost their moms. We educate adopters and members of the community about how to be responsible pet owners.

In addition to caring for our animals, we perform repairs, mow, weed, paint, and do lots of laundry. Then there's the paperwork, phones, email inquiries, and maintaining the records of our animals. It's all a labor of love.

We have our dreams too like another building, a spay/neuter clinic, upgrading our kennels, and increasing our electrical capacity for better air conditioning in our buildings.

We couldn't do any of the above things or have our dream list without donations from our very generous community who are always there for us. That's why we ask you to join us by donating during the Big Give.  Please pass the word to your family and friends about the work we do. We ask them to help us too. We thank you in advance.

Who We Are

In 1977 longtime Bulverde resident Dolores Caldwell picked up the local phone book and started cold calling with the question, “I think Bulverde needs a shelter for animals, will you help me get one started?” The long term result of that effort was the shelter’s designation as a 501(c)(3) non-profit in 1983. The shelter began as a collection of volunteers taking into their homes stray and abandoned animals while searching to place them in adoptive homes.

Today BAHS claims a 3.25 acre tract as home with indoor/outdoor dog kennels, a cattery, nursery/surgery recovery building, agility field and fenced play yards for exercising dogs, all in a park-like setting. We care for up to 400 dogs and cats per year, thanks to the support of a strong volunteer force. We work with Animal Control for the City of Bulverde, we partner with other shelters and rescue organizations in Comal County and beyond to care for, rehabilitate, transport and rehome homeless pets.

Every animal that comes to BAHS is evaluated by a veterinarian and any medical needs addressed. Prior to adoption, each animal is spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, heartworm-tested and current on vaccinations. Because we are a no-kill shelter, we include a large measure of love for all the animals entrusted to us by various circumstances.
