Xander's Story
When Guide Dogs of Texas entrusted me, a new volunteer puppy raiser, with an eight-week-old black Labrador named Xander, I knew I wasn't simply bringing home a puppy. I was accepting the privilege—and responsibility—of helping prepare a future guide dog for someone I've never met, but whose life I hope he will forever change one day.
Like every puppy, Xander has had his share of zoomies, chewing, and testing boundaries. But unlike most puppies, every experience navigating new places, learning to ignore distractions, and trusting the world around him is preparation for his extraordinary purpose.
Behind every confident guide dog are hundreds of everyday moments. Those ordinary moments are where Xander and I spend our days.
Watching his confidence grow has been one of the greatest joys of my life. Every week he learns something new, becomes a little braver, a little calmer, and a little more prepared for the day he'll return to Guide Dogs of Texas to begin his formal guide dog training.
One day, Xander will leave my home and begin the next chapter of his journey. My hope is that he will eventually be matched with someone who is blind or visually impaired and become much more than a guide dog—he'll become a trusted partner, a source of confidence, and a pathway to greater independence.
Guide Dogs of Texas provides professionally trained guide dogs at no cost to Texans who are blind or visually impaired. Every donation helps provide the veterinary care, equipment, food, training, and support needed to prepare puppies like Xander for their life-changing work ahead.
