St. Matthew Catholic School

In the heart of North Central San Antonio, St. Matthew Catholic School was born from a beautiful vision in 1993. It was founded to be more than just a school—it was a place to nurture our parish community and deepen our children's faith. We opened our doors with nearly 400 students, and with the blessing of Bishop Joseph Galante, our journey began.

Over the years, our school has been shaped by the hearts and hands of dedicated leaders:

• Msgr. John Flynn (1992): He first heard the call for a parish school from our community and made that dream a reality.




• Msgr. Michael Yarbrough (1998-2010): With a deep love for our families, faculty, and staff, he championed our school's mission for over a decade.




• Fr. Dennis Aréchiga (2010-2022): He brought incredible growth, guiding the construction of our new athletic center and the start of renovations to the McDonald Event Center.




• Fr. Eric Ritter (2022-Present): Since joining us, he has continued to pour his heart into our community, bringing a wealth of experience and faith to our school.

Our school has grown not just in size, but in spirit. We have embraced new ways to connect with our families, from enhancing communication through our online systems and weekly newsletters to sharing our daily joys on social media. We've introduced the STREAM Initiative, weaving Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, and Math into projects that spark our students' curiosity and creativity.

We've also invested in creating a more secure and beautiful campus, adding turfed playgrounds and an upgraded sports court, along with new St. Matthew branding that proudly shows our identity to the community.

Today, we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, remaining ever committed to our founding principles: nurturing faith, striving for excellence in education, and serving others. We are, and always will be, a loving community guided by the heart of our Catholic faith.
