Kinetic Kids is changing the lives of children with disabilities by helping them become athletes and artists. Through sports and fine arts programs led by licensed therapists and dedicated coaches, we create opportunities where success is possible for every child.

Instead of stuck on the sidelines, Kinetic Kids are running the bases in baseball, crossing the finish line of their very first race and performing a dance routine on stage. Progress looks different for every child, but the impact is the same, healthier, stronger and more confident.

For parents, Kinetic Kids is more than a program. Families who once felt alone now share the bleachers with others who understand them. They celebrate milestones that may seem small to some, but mean everything to them like a child raising their arm to shoot a basketball, saying a cheer out loud or making their very first friend.

Who We Are

Kinetic Kids provides year-round sports and fine arts programs to children from 18 months to 21 years of age with intellectual and physical disabilities in San Antonio and surrounding areas. Programs are designed, facilitated and customized by physical or occupational therapists to meet the physical and developmental needs of each child, each child is safe and successful.

Current census data show that there are close to 40,000 children with one or more special needs in Bexar, Comal and Kendall counties, demonstrating a need for these programs in our community. Healthy lifestyles, physical exercise, and social interaction are critical for children with special needs. The CDC states obesity rates for children with disabilities are 38% higher than those without. Studies show children with disabilities are more likely to develop secondary conditions like diabetes, respiratory failure, cardiovascular disease, depression, and isolation from inactivity. Regular physical activity improves a child’s main disability and combats secondary conditions.

Sports and recreation programs promote socialization, improving self-confidence & reducing the need for some medications. Children – those with and without disabilities - want to be part of a team, part of a peer circle, and engage in activities and sports with their peers. By providing adaptive sports groups like basketball, dance, baseball, and cheerleading, Kinetic Kids aims to take ALL kids off the sidelines and into the game.

Kinetic Kids programs have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in a number of ways. Related closures, cancellations and postponements are impacting our participants, volunteers, staff and fundraising efforts.

With social distancing impacting these exercise programs for children with special needs, we foresee an increase in participation in our summer and/or fall programs. Our goal is to restart programming as soon as possible once the pandemic is under control and government agencies allow group activities to return to normal operations. We do anticipate a higher number of requests for financial or scholarship support from our families whom likely will have experienced their own financial set-back. Our current policy is to offer scholarships to all who seek them to allow all families wishing to participate in one or more program that opportunity.
