Each summer, more than 20 million Mexican free-tailed bats gather at Bat Conservation International’s Bracken Cave Preserve, forming the largest known bat colony in the world. Their nightly emergence is unforgettable—but protecting Bracken is about much more than the cave itself.
Surrounding this remarkable roost are 1,500 acres of protected Texas Hill Country habitat. Carefully stewarding this land helps safeguard the bats, native plants and wildlife that depend on it while ensuring Bracken remains a healthy, resilient landscape for generations to come.

Our Big Give Goal: $6,000 for a New Hustler Mower
After 19 years of faithful service, Bracken’s trusty zero-turn mower has mowed her last acre. Her transmission has finally given out, and it’s time for a replacement.
Our Preserve team has its sights set on a new zero-turn Hustler mower. And while a mower might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about bat conservation, maintaining a preserve the size of Bracken takes the right tools.
A dependable mower helps our team maintain trails and access areas, manage the grounds used by thousands of visitors each year, support ongoing stewardship, maintain firebreaks, and safely care for the landscape surrounding one of the most important bat roosts on Earth.
Our goal is to raise $6,000 to put the Hustler to work at Bracken Cave Preserve.

More Than a Cave The Preserve protects critical habitat for Mexican free-tailed bats and other Texas wildlife. It gives researchers opportunities to better understand bats and the ecosystems they support. And each year, thousands of visitors have the chance to witness one of nature’s greatest spectacles and leave with a new appreciation for bats. Bats play vital roles in healthy ecosystems around the world—from controlling insects to pollinating plants and dispersing seeds.
