American Gateways

For almost 40 years, American Gateways has provided vital legal services in Central Texas for low-income immigrants who cannot afford private representation. In 2025, we served more than 7,000 immigrants across San Antonio, Waco, and surrounding counties.

Texas leads the country in immigration detention. Access to legal counsel isn't a convenience. It can determine whether a family stays together or is torn apart.

Rising demand and a shifting immigration policy landscape have pushed us to be more creative and nimble, but many people still go unserved. That's why we launched two new programs:

PAPA (Pro Se Assistance Program): Since 2025, we've helped people representing themselves in court, meeting them in the parking lot outside San Antonio Immigration Court and through monthly legal clinics. From July 2025 to June 2026, we assisted nearly 1,850 people through PAPA and 300 more through our clinics.

Habeas Project: As detentions rise and pathways out shrink, a Writ of Habeas Corpus is one of the few remaining options. However, it's nearly impossible to file without an attorney. In just its first months, this new project helped release more than 20 people from detention.
