For many young people, getting a driver’s license is a rite of passage. For youth in foster care, it can be the difference between having an opportunity and being able to reach it.

MileMarkers NPO Inc. is a Texas nonprofit helping foster youth ages 16–21 overcome transportation barriers as they prepare for adulthood and independence.

Young people transitioning from foster care are often expected to begin adult life without many of the resources and support systems their peers can rely on. Getting to work, college, job training, medical appointments, or even the grocery store can become a major challenge when reliable transportation is unavailable.

MileMarkers helps bridge that gap.

Through our FirstGear Cohort, we help foster youth with:

• Driver education and behind-the-wheel training
• Assistance obtaining a Texas driver’s license
• Access to a vehicle for licensing and road testing
• Reliable used vehicles for qualifying youth
• Auto insurance and registration assistance
• Fuel and basic vehicle expenses
• Vehicle maintenance education and practical support
• Guidance designed to help young people successfully manage the responsibilities that come with transportation

But our mission is about more than cars.

Transportation creates choices.

A driver’s license can mean accepting a better job instead of the job located closest to the bus route. A reliable vehicle can mean attending college or trade school, getting to work consistently, keeping medical appointments, buying groceries, and building relationships within the community.

Most importantly, it gives young people greater control over where their lives can take them.

At MileMarkers, we believe foster youth deserve more than a transition out of care. They deserve the tools, opportunities, and support to build independent lives of their own.

Every license earned, every set of keys handed over, and every mile driven represents another step forward.
