For 17 years, you have helped the Heart of Texas Concert Band bring high-quality live music to San Antonio free of charge.

Your support has helped us present more than 160 free concerts at 35 venues throughout the San Antonio communities. You helped us bring in outstanding guest artists and composers, collaborate with arts organizations across the city to make live music available to people who might not otherwise have the means to attend.  We could not have done it without you.

We Need Your Help Again This Year

Every  free concert  still has a cost.

Your Big Give contribution helps cover the real expenses of putting these concerts onstage, bringing music into our schools, welcoming guest artists to San Antonio, and keeping performances accessible to the public.  Your support helps fund performance venues, security, music, instruments, equipment, guest artists, production expenses, and community outreach.

The cost of keeping these performances free continues to rise. Theaters that once averaged approximately $1,500 to $2,000 per concert have increased significantly.  Security requirements, music, instruments, equipment, guest artists, and other production costs have gone up as well.

Your gift helps us rent performance venues, purchase music and instruments, support guest artists, cover growing production costs, and continue presenting exceptional concerts free to the San Antonio community.

Bring Live Music to the Next Generation

This season, the Heart of Texas Concert Band will be part of Alamo City Arts'  Arts Connect: A Student Concert Series, presenting four performances of Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals in collaboration with the Alamo City Dance Company, including Sasha Krukava and Nurlan Kinerbayev.  

We project reaching approximately 3,200 students with four performances.

Arts Connect makes it easier for students to attend music and dance performances. By bringing live music and dance directly to students, we can give more young people an experience with the performing arts. For some of these students, this may be their first opportunity to hear a live concert band or see this level of live dance performance.

Bring Óscar Navarro to San Antonio

On April 18, the Heart of Texas Concert Band will welcome internationally acclaimed Spanish composer Óscar Navarro and bassoonist José Lozano Prior to San Antonio for a concert devoted to Navarro's music.  Navarro will conduct a program featuring his compositions, including the world premiere of the wind-band version of Essence: Concerto for Bassoon and Wind Band, featuring Lozano Prior as soloist.

The band continues a tradition it has built of bringing important composers and guest artists to San Antonio and allowing local audiences to experience their work firsthand.  Your support helps make that possible.

A Record of Musical Excellence

The Heart of Texas Concert Band is a premiere, award-winning, all-volunteer community concert band committed to musical excellence and service to San Antonio.

In 2022, the band received the Sudler Silver Scroll, sponsored by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. Our founder and Music Director, Dr. R. Mark Rogers, received the 2023 Association of Concert Bands Outstanding Conductor Award.

The band has welcomed more than 70 featured soloists and worked with musicians, conductors, composers, and cultural organizations from San Antonio and beyond. Its history includes the American premiere of Carlos Pellicer's Menu, the world premiere of Euphoric City, composed by Pellicer for San Antonio's Tricentennial, and performances conducted by Johan de Meij.  This season's work with Óscar Navarro and José Lozano Prior continues the tradition.

Part of Alamo City Arts

In 2022, the Heart of Texas Concert Band joined Alamo City Arts, creating new opportunities for collaboration and expanding its community reach.  With the close of our most recent season, Alamo City Arts now reaches more than 90,000 patrons annually through performances, educational programs, and community engagement. The Heart of Texas Concert Band contributes to that impact through its free public concerts, collaborative productions, and Arts Connect performances.
